Power Racks - Essential Home Gym Equipment

!±8± Power Racks - Essential Home Gym Equipment

A power rack is one of the most useful pieces of equipment for a home gym. If you have a good weight set and a good bench, the next thing you should consider is a good quality power rack. A power rack is a simple device that holds a barbell at any height you choose to start an exercise, and provides safety rails that catch the barbell at the end of the set. There is a link at the bottom of this article that will take you to some pictures of several different power racks.

The most important features of a power rack are safety and versatility. If you set it up properly, it enables you to perform many heavy exercises in relative safety. If you have ever bench pressed a heavy weight by yourself without a rack of some kind, you know what I mean! What do you do when you can't get that barbell off your chest? You either scream for help or shift the weight to one side and let it drop to the floor which not only can damage your equipment and the floor, but opens you up to the possibility of serious injury to your back, neck and shoulders. A properly used power rack prevents this by providing an adjustable height safety catch that allows you to simply lower the weight onto it and you can safely slide out from under the barbell with no risk or effort whatsoever!

Power racks are fully adjustable so you can set it up for safe military presses, bench presses (flat, incline or decline), squats, calf raises, shrugs and any other movement where the barbell does not go to the floor at the end of the set. Many racks also have a chin up bar, adjustable dip bars, and an optional lat pull down attachment. I highly recommend the lat pulley attachment on the power rack versus a separate machine. I have used both and the rack is much more stable than most stand-alone lat machines, and the space savings is considerable.

I believe the power rack to be essential for someone who works out alone in a home gym. If you have a good set of weights and a good quality bench and are serious about your weight lifting or bodybuilding program, get a power rack next!

I personally own and use a Body Solid (Powerline) Power rack with a plate loading lat attachment, but Powertec and Yukon make quality racks as well. I am partial to Body Solid because I like all my equipment to look the same, and I have been please with every piece of Body Solid equipment I have purchased over the years.

Roof Cleaning - The Right Way

!±8± Roof Cleaning - The Right Way

As you might already be aware, chemical roof cleaning is a superior alternative to roof power washing. There are many roof cleaning products and solutions on the market these days, all claiming to be superior, and all claiming that their's is the safest and most effective, but it's important to keep in mind that these are companies that are just trying to make a buck and will say just about anything to sell their product.

In my considerable experience, there's only one way to clean a roof the right way, and that's with a sodium hypochlorite-based solution. Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in bleach and chlorine, and when applied to a roof at the right ratios is quite simply the safest, most effective way to clean a roof. It is the recommended method for cleaning roofs by ARMA (the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) and GAF (North America's largest shingle manufacturer).

ARMA recommends a mixture of bleach, water, and TSP (which can be found in paint stores), but be careful with the TSP on painted surfaces as it can remove the gloss in high dosages. I have found that the TSP is helpful but not necessary, as the bleach is the primary cleaning agent. In addition, every roof cleaning professional that uses this method has his or her own "secret" additives that they add to this mix to give it just the right cleaning potency for their climate, but the common denominator is a final liquid solution that is about 3-4% sodium hypochlorite. So if your common household bleach is around 6%, you would need to have equal parts bleach and water to get you down to 3%.

This is by far the safest and most effective way to clean a roof, but the catch is that an average one-story ranch house is going to require anywhere from 30 to 60 gallons of total mix. That means you'd need about 15-30 gallons of typical 6% household bleach. Typically, the pros will have the whole mix in a large poly tank on their truck or trailer, and will use a battery-powered pump to deliver the solution through a long polybraided hose up to the roof surface. They'll usually have a bleach resistant tip on the end of the hose that evenly disperses a soft spray over the roof surface. They'll leave the solution on the surface to let it do its thing for several minutes before rinsing the surface with water from the garden hose. So no power washers or scrubbing should be required (the only exception could be for thick moss accumulations). If you're doing this yourself, you'd also want to keep the whole perimeter of the home rinsed down very well during the application (preferably by a second person) as sodium hypochlorite can have a negative effect on landscaping if not properly diluted. Be especially mindful of areas where downspouts empty into grass or other greenery. Occasionally you might have to go over a few spots a second time, but the results should be instant! Rinse the roof and perimeter very well, let dry, and enjoy your new-looking roof.

You can do this yourself, of course, but you'd be looking at having to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment and chemicals, so why not just hire a professional that specializes in non-pressure roof cleaning? Try to find one that utilizes the roof cleaning chemicals that I just outlined.

If you do decide to go for it yourself, BE CAREFUL. The hazards include, but are not limited to: falling off ladders, slipping on the roof surface (which is made very slick when solution is applied), getting bleach spray in your eyes or lungs (wear eye protection and a mask), leaning a ladder against a power line, etc. This work is not for the faint of heart. Harnesses and support systems would be a good idea.

You can expect this type of treatment to keep the roof clean anywhere from one to five years before stains start to return, with an average of two to three years. I've yet to come across any so-called "sealers" that actually work very well. Your best bet is just to have the roof re-cleaned by a professional when the algae streaks have returned. The zinc strips that some try to market don't work that well in my opinion, either. They may be somewhat effective for the 2-3 feet of roof surface directly below the strip, but what about the rest of the roof? Zinc is also a very expensive material. Just have a pro clean your roof every three to four years and save yourself the hassle.

Cat 5, 5E, 6, and 6A Cables - Distance and Speed Limitations

!±8± Cat 5, 5E, 6, and 6A Cables - Distance and Speed Limitations

A simplified summary of the specs for the most common categories in use today can help you determine what is right for you.

FREQUENCY-DISTANCE
Category 5-100 mbps-100 meters (328 feet)
Category 5e-1 Gigabit/sec-100 meters (328 feet)
Category 6- 3 Gigabit/sec-100 meters (328 feet)
Category 6A- 10 Gigabit/sec-100 meters (328 feet)

If you have very short runs, you may be able to use the cable at a lower rating than officially required. For example, on a 10 Gigabit application it is usually possible to go up to 35 meters on a Category 6 cable. Another possible application is a 30 foot run at 3 Gigabit on a Cat 5e cable which should work correctly because its such a short run. If you have the luxury of trying out short applications you may be able to operate with cable rated at one lower category than the 100 meter rated cable for the required speed.

There are also considerations when the cable runs near power lines or fluorescent lights where there is a possibility of increased crosstalk, that may have to be dealt with. In a well designed Data Center cable layout, there are often 4 separate layers of cables including copper cables, fiber cables, power cables, and ground lines. Certain cable layouts have crosstalk considerations that can indicate the use of (ScTP) overall shielded pairs, or (STP) shielded pairs and overall shielding rather than (UTP) unshielded twisted pair cable.

Installation is also very important to make sure that the system supplies the standards that the components are designed to. Sloppy punch downs on the 110 Patch Panels may effect the system operation.

Also a Cat5E Jumper put serially into a system of Cat 6 cable components will bring the entire Cat 6 run down to a Cat 5e level or less.

Finally it is important to design the data system with the future requirements in mind. If the system will have to be upgraded in the foreseeable future to handle higher frequencies or longer runs or a combination of both, it is usually much more costly when the labor charges are taken into consideration to have to make any major changes. Therefore the level of cable should include the increased capability required in the future, on the initial installation.
